Just writing to let you know that my fairly new subject helmet saved my life in a recent accident I had while on a group tour ride in Peru, South America. In 50+ years of riding, this was the first “moving accident” I’d ever had (have had a million low speed dumps, riding ADV for the most part). I apparently “greyed out” due to hypoxia at high elevation (15,000 + feet above sea level) while riding twisties with my tour group through the Andes in Peru. I greyed out and missed a curve, plunging down a steep incline with a perpendicular ditch further down the hill. I don’t remember any of it, but riders behind me said I never even applied the brakes, and the ditch sent the R1200GS and me somersaulting down the hill, with pannier boxes launching 15′ in the air.

The New Generation of the Helmet Made For Adventure

The Aventuro Carbon PRO helmet sets a new standard for protection, comfort, and cooling airflow for adventure riders looking for a lightweight and airy travel companion.

This is the 3rd generation of the legendary Aventuro Carbon helmet which has become a top choice thanks to the lightweight carbon fiber construction, and aerodynamic design that improves rider comfort by reducing neck strain.

The Carbon PRO is a completely new design that features more ventilation, better peripheral vision, upgraded liners with new pad-locking system and enhanced quick-release peak anchor system. The best ADV helmet just got better with the Aventuro Carbon PRO!

• More airflow with 8 intake vents and 4 exhaust vents for maximum cooling when the riding gets serious or the temperatures soar. The air efficiently cools around your head with distribution channels in the EPS foam.

• Glove-friendly controls with improved grip and function for operating vents and opening the shield on the helmet with riding gloves.

• Dual-function chin vent has been re-designed to provide rider with fine controls of the airflow to the visor and the rider.

• Updated brow vents increase the cooling airflow right where you need it for improved rider comfort when the going gets tough.

• New peak design that improves aerodynamics by cutting through the wind cleanly with less drag which reduces neck strain and increases rider comfort. The lower peak mounting points have been repositioned above the visor. This design also makes it easier to remove the shield for cleaning, installing a pin-lock or upgrading to a tinted visor.

• Improved quick-release mechanism for the peak utilizing metal threads for a reliable and secure connection. This allows the peak to be removed without using tools for riders wanting to put the helmet into ‘street mode’ for the best aerodynamics and reduced neck strain which is ideal for riding at higher speeds or street touring.

• Improved visibility with expanded peripheral range of view and shape that better accommodates glasses.

• Meets high standards for safety with both DOT and ECE 22.06 certifications.

• Communication system friendly with embossed cavities and recesses for speakers, microphone, and wires.

Updated interior with completely redesigned moisture-wicking Coolmax liner that can be washed or replaced to keep the helmet feeling fresh. It’s also equipped with 3-dimensional pre-shaped cheek pads and an F.R.S emergency removal system. The underside of the cheek pads feature reflective panels to help riders be seen in low light conditions.

Touratech entered the helmet segment more than a decade ago with the Aventuro Carbon which was focused on providing adventure motorcyclists with a lighter alternative to the helmets available at that time. The company is now releasing the 3rd generation of this revolutionary product with the Aventuro Carbon PRO. This helmet sets new standards for cooling airflow, glove-friendly vent controls, and an improved liner system, while continuing to be a rider favorite thanks to its lightweight feel and low-drag aerodynamics which reduce neck strain and improve rider comfort.

The Carbon PRO has been completely re-designed from the ground up. The Peak mounting has been changed to sturdy threaded fasteners for improved reliability, and the shape has been streamlined to reduce drag for enhanced rider comfort. The new peak also mounts higher on the helmet which makes it easier to remove the shield for installing a pin-lock system or upgrading to a tinted shield.

The airflow has been maximized with 8 intake vents, 4 exhaust vents and upgraded distribution channels in the EPS liner for best-in-class cooling airflow. The helmet liner has also been upgraded to a better material and an innovative new system for locking in the cheek pads to prevent them from coming loose inadvertently.

Further changes have been made to improve the field of vision and to better accommodate glasses.

“We’re happy to see some big improvements on this helmet while retaining the lightweight and airy feeling that made it a top choice for adventure riding since the beginning. I really like the cheek pad locking system that ensures they don’t come loose and the wider range of peripheral vision and easier fit with glasses”

As we head into the 2022 riding season, adventure motorcycles are once again trending at a WOT pace with nearly every manufacturer offering one.

Even Harley-Davidson, for some the last manufacturer you’d think would launch an adventure bike, has entered the fray.

The appeal of adventure bikes is obvious. Not only do these machines let you endure long stretches on the back roads or highways in comfort, but when the pavement stops and the dirt begins, ADV bikes are ready for the challenge.

Just as motorcycling has caught up to the do-it-all nature of adventure bikes, helmet companies have to get in on the action too. But this poses a challenge.

Adventure helmets need to be able to provide the benefits of both road helmets and off-road helmets. How do you choose?

I’ll walk you through exactly what to look for in this guide. Beginning with some general topics, I’ll tell you what they mean and why they’re important.

First, What is an adventure helmet?

For most of the 1980s and 1990s, and well before, adventure riders would either wear a street helmet or a dirt helmet and modify as needed.

Road riders would sometimes pop off the faceshield on their street helmet and wear goggles once they got in the dirt, or they would wear their motocross helmet, goggles and all, and just build their neck muscles on the road when the wind would want to pull the beaks of their helmets towards the sky.

An adventure helmet bridges the gap between the two. It’s mostly shaped like a dirt helmet but with a faceshield built-in for road riding.

The shield is designed to go on and off easily and be replaced with goggles if you want. There are also modular helmets that flip up.

Modulars are super convenient, but there’s a minority that argues these lids are unsafe. Some say the split in the shell for the front to open harms the integrity of the lid.

I’ve known friends who have crashed with modulars and never had issues. And many of the top helmet manufacturers have put these through some serious testing with positive reviews. I have no worries about them and use modular lids often.

Adventure Helmet Guides: What to Look For

No matter what you’re looking for in an ADV helmet, the most important things are that it fits your head comfortably and meets all the required safety regulations (DOT approval!).

Your adventure helmet could have all the greatest features available, but it won’t do you any good if you don’t wear it because it’s uncomfortable.

With that said, here’s what to look for before purchasing an ADV lid.

Ventilation

If you’re riding on a hot day or just working up a sweat through a tough trail, you want as much airflow as possible.

If you’re wondering why some helmets cost considerably more than others, part of the reason is that these companies have put some thought and design work into flowing as much air as possible through their helmets.

A well-ventilated head will help keep you cool for longer. Studies have shown that once your head starts to overheat, the rest of the body won’t be far behind. And this is a huge safety risk.

Interior Liner

You’re going to be spending a lot of time inside that helmet, so the material actually touching your skin better be nice.

Most quality helmets use a material that wicks away sweat, so the incoming airflow will help cool you down. Also, a nice feature to have is a fully removable liner (some only offer removable cheek pads).

That way, when you’re done riding and the inside of your helmet is nasty—something that often happens for adventure riders—you can just toss the liner into the washing machine.

A fresh helmet helps keep a positive focus before starting any ride, and a fresh-smelling liner does this quickly.

Visor

Helmets arrive with a clear visor, which is nice for night riding or riding in adverse conditions, but a dark visor is a way to go for sunny days. Other helmets arrive with flip-down internal dark visors, which is a feature that makes riding life much simpler.

See for yourself how easy or hard it is to change faceshields. Make sure it has some sort of fog barrier, too. A PinLock system is the popular choice nowadays and is offered on the most reputable lids.

Also, look through the visor to make sure it’s optically correct. While rare, this condition does occur on some helmets. This can cause a loss of focus, increasing your risk of smashing into something.

Weight

Light makes right, as the saying goes. A heavy helmet is going to wear you out much faster over the course of a long ride than a lighter one. So keep that in mind.

The average weight of a size large adventure helmet is around 3 to 3.5 pounds. That’s light enough to keep your neck and shoulders from aching after a long day of riding.

Shape/Comfort

This one comes in two parts. The shape of an Adventure helmet could lean towards a road bias or a dirt bias, or fall somewhere in the middle. Regardless, every shape will prompt a different feel on the head.

This is a reason manufacturers like Arai offer their street lids in a few different sizes. Everyone’s noggin is different, so a helmet’s shape can be comfortable for one rider and horrible for another rider. This is why it’s always best to try on a helmet before purchasing one.

Also, going back to the fit category, make sure the helmet is comfortable. And not just for the few minutes you try it at the store. Try wearing it for as long as possible to find any uncomfortable spots, or “hot spots,” as most of these problem areas are called.

Modular

I mentioned it earlier, but the modular option may be appealing for a lot of people. The option to flip up the chin bar will make it much easier to talk to people at a stop or while fueling up, take a drink, or just get some fresh air.

Again, some people argue the overall safety of a modular. They say because there’s a hinge in your helmet, it will never be as safe or robust as a non-modular helmet.

Price Point

This is the big one. How much are you willing to spend? Price points vary dramatically within the world of ADV lids, from $350 to over $1,000.

Fortunately, there are quality helmets at every price point. What you might give up by spending less are some of the creature comforts or slightly less ventilation.

And Remember The 5-Year Factor

How many years should you wear your helmet? The golden rule for motorcycle helmets is five years of manufacturer date. This is because a helmet’s shell naturally deteriorates over time from outside elements and simply time, which creates a safety hazard if you crash.

Most manufacturer’s dates are printed inside the shell or on the chin strap. If buying a used helmet, which is advised against because a helmet will naturally take on the shape of the previous rider, double-check that the lid is still in that window.

Know this factor also when buying bargain helmets online; contact the store and ask for a manufacturer’s date if you plan to keep it for a long time.

A happy adventure motorcyclist is a safe motorcyclist, and an essential portion of this safety factor is protecting your head with the proper helmet. But with so many choices available, finding the optimal lid takes some research.

This guide is designed to help minimize that research when you begin searching for your perfect lid. Happy ADV helmet shopping.

The Aventuro Traveller will be ready to ship Winter 2020. Available in two different shell types, Multi-Fiber & Full Carbon Fiber each in XS – 3XL.

PRE-ORDER YOURS NOW!

The Aventuro Traveller is an innovative modular helmet designed specifically for the demands of adventure riding. You’ll love that it’s lightweight, features huge airflow, and is quiet even at speed. It’s a true modular which allows you to open the chin bar for easy communication at the gas station or hatching a plan with your riding buddies.

When the ride gets rowdy or the weather warm, you will love the massive airflow that distributes air around your head to keep you cool and comfortable. A helmet’s job is to keep you protected, but a side effect of this protection is often excessive heat for the rider. The Aventuro Traveller solves this problem with a peak design that passes airflow into the oversized vent on your forehead distributing cooling air around your head for comfort in demanding terrain or hot weather. In fact, the flow is so great that the helmet comes with a ‘low-flow’ flap that you can close to reduce airflow for riding in cooler weather.

Further airflow cools the rider’s face by entering through the large chin vent. The glove-friendly vents are easy to open and close while riding.

The Aventuro Traveller is lighter than its predecessor and most other modular helmets on the market. The carbon version is a half-pound lighter than the previous model and the multifiber version is a third-of-a-pound lighter. You’ll notice reduced neck strain and improved comfort for long days in the saddle.

An innovative double seal keeps rain and dust out while reducing sound levels for a comfortable ride. The double seal is crafted from soft rubber which lines the shield closure surface as well as the chin-bar closure area. This gives you better protection from the elements and also reduces wind noise for a more peaceful and enjoyable ride.

You’ll enjoy big vistas with the large range of peripheral vision courtesy of the wide opening. The field of view is excellent, providing more information, whether you are riding in the city or enjoying the wide-open road. An integrated sun visor flips down with a glove friendly control providing you with sun protection when needed.

The shield stays open in 4 positions with strong detents. The lowest opening is designated as the anti-fog mode. Additional anti-fog capabilities come courtesy of the Pinlock insert that can be
installed for riding in wet situations. Grip tabs located on both sides of the shield allow easy opening with either hand.

A gravity-defying chin bar stays in the up position until you pull down to close it. No surprise closings at inopportune moments like some other modular helmets. Designed with easy access to the opening mechanism allowing routine cleaning and maintenance for smooth and consistent operation.

Quick-Ratchet buckle with stainless steel mechanism resists corrosion providing quick closure of the chin strap and reliable performance for years.

Stay dry with a cool-max liner that wicks moisture away and provides a soft feel for rider comfort. The neck roll and cheek pads are in one integrated piece for easy removal and cleaning.

The helmet is set up to accommodate most clamp-on style communication systems including SENA, Scala Rider and more. It comes with cavities for speakers and a microphone and easy routing paths for wires making communication installation a snap.

The ‘no-grab’ peak design cuts through the wind nicely minimizing neck strain keeping you comfortable and it comes with an optional extension to block more sun if desired.

The helmet comes with a removable camera mount on top of the helmet so you can share your adventure with friends.

The Aventuro Traveller is available in 3 graphics styles for the carbon fiber version and 2 solid colors for the multifiber version.

Meets the safety standards of a full-face helmet while providing the convenience of a modular.

Mastering Body Position for ADV Motorcycle Riding

Fundamentals. They’re the cornerstones for your two-wheel abilities, and without them, you’re going to struggle, be frustrated, and likely get a face full of dirt.

Long story short, there is no substitute for excellent fundamentals and arguably the most important fundamental of all is body position.

What’s the argument? Body position has a direct link to your control, balance, comfort, and ability to make correct inputs on the motorcycle. You could have the nicest motorcycle on the market with the trickest gizmos and gadgets, but without proper body position, it means nothing.

The Basis of Body Position

The foundation of a proper technique should start with a comfortable position on the motorcycle—regardless of what you hear, you should never put yourself on a motorcycle where you are uncomfortable.

Every rider is a different shape and size, so there is no one exact way to sit or stand on a bike.

Foot Position

Before getting into the basics of a properly seated or standing position, it’s important to talk about proper footing, which is equally vital in both.

Always use the balls of your feet to place the majority of your bodyweight on the foot pegs. This athletic position is more useful in transferring weight and balancing than using your arches or heels because it can be done quicker and more precisely.

Dragging toe sliders in the corners? Picking your feet up and placing the balls of your feet on the pegs will give your toes more ground clearance at lean angle.

This position also pushes your weight forward and puts your body in a position to travel with the momentum of the motorcycle, rather than slacking behind it.

Imagine for second that you are riding to the grocery store. How would you sit on the motorcycle? Your seated position won’t vary much from that point.

Sit forward on the seat, giving yourself a small gap (an inch or so) between your groin and the fuel tank. This will allow you to operate around the tank, but won’t put your far enough back in the seat to take vital load away from the front end of the motorcycle.

Your position in the seat will also determine your elbow positioning. Find a spot in the seat where your elbows are just slightly in front of your torso with a slight bend.

On the contrary, having your torso in front of your elbow will cause unnecessary pressure on your wrists and take away your leverage from the handlebars.

Standing on the pegs, slightly roll your toes over the front part of the peg and push your body forward on the motorcycle. Do yourself a favor and clamp onto the fuel tank with your knees, which will increase stability and control of the motorcycles, especially at high speed.

If seated, position your butt with one cheek off the outside edge of the seat, giving you more balance as the tires fight for grip on the dirt.

It’s important to note that other rider inputs will be exaggerated here. Because the tires are already fighting to find grip, any extra throttle or brake input could be enough to put you on the ground.

A general rule of thumb is to always be positioning your body on the motorcycle for what is coming in the next two seconds. This will help keep you out of the trouble of getting into a corner or technical section with your body not set into the right position to handle the obstacles.

Remember, the faster you’re riding, the sooner these inputs are needed. Set your body early for the corners, climbs, or tech sections, and your riding will improve for not only speed but smoothness.

By Ron Lieback

Motorcycling comes with a sense of freedom you can’t experience anywhere else, especially on an ADV bike. Go anywhere, anytime. And bring a group of buddies along to share the stories with. Really, there isn’t anything better.

Going anywhere at any time, however, arrives with its own risks. Brutal weather conditions, treacherous trails and roads, and the occasional miscalculation can make this an unforgiving hobby.

That said, having the proper adventure riding gear is mandatory. Without it, you’re putting yourself in harm’s way by means of injury and downright discomfort.

Below are five tips to help you maximize the potential of your riding gear, help it last longer, and keep you more comfortable when Mother Nature wreaks havoc.

Proper Fit – It’s More Than Just Comfort

We’ve met hundreds of riders who’ve purchased the highest rated, most expensive pieces of gear on the market, only for it to be fitting too snug or loose on their body. News flash: regardless of its safety features, a poor fit won’t protect you.

Let’s start with the helmet—unarguably the most important piece of motorcycle safety equipment.

Picking out a new helmet is no task that should be taken lightheartedly. First, measure your head around the crown and compare it to the manufacturer’s sizing chart to begin your search. Next, try on the helmet. It should fit snug around the baseball cap area of your head while compressing your cheeks. At this point, it shouldn’t slide when pushed up or down, but instead it should move your whole head. On the contrary, it should not be tight enough to cause pain.

A same snug, yet comfortable fit should be accepted with jackets, pants, and gloves. A loose fit may prove more comfortable for leisurely riding, but in a crash can cause a serious issue. Should you fall down, the protective armor has potential to move and not absorb the impact in the intended area. And it doesn’t help with road rash either.

Layers, Layers, Layers!

OK, so you’ve planned a multi-day ride that is set to take you through multiple climates, but are only able to pack one set of gear. This could get tricky. Freezing maybe. Hot perhaps.

The trick here is to layer beneath your riding jacket and pants with thin and easily removable garments, such as the Touratech Primero series of base layers. If your morning ride begins brisk then grows warmer, pull over and remove a layer or two until you’re back to a comfortable temperature. Riding into a chilly night? Throw on another layer. Simple stuff, and easy to pack into a tank bag.

Think of the best layers as thermals or lightweight compression gear that can help dissipate heat. Know the weather forecast of your ride and plan accordingly.

Clean Visors are a Must

There’s nothing worse than a large bug splattered across your helmet’s visor. It’s annoying, dangerous, and makes you look like an amateur in photos.

Do yourself a favor and spend a minute roadside cleaning your visor. The best method? A soft microfiber towel and bottle of visor cleaner will do the trick.

First, pick off any larger bugs by scraping lighty with your finger nails Cover the visor in the cleaning solution, letting it soak for a few moments before wiping it off with the microfiber towel. Plus, most visor cleaners come with an anti-fog or rain-repellent agent that will make your ride into harsh weather that much more comfortable.

We also know riders that simply spit on their visors and then use a microfiber.

Deep Clean Your Gear Before Storage

If you’re preparing for winter storage or a long hiatus from riding, it’s going to require more than just a quick water rinse to ensure your gear remains fresh while it takes a break from the trail.

A long hiatus gives the gear and its inner linings the opportunity to absorb the salt and oils from your body that are produced while riding. If you skimp on cleaning before storage, there’s a good chance that it will come out smelling of some funky odor and possible deterioration to the inner liners.

Before packing up for the season, spend a few hours deep cleaning your riding gear. Remove the liners and wash them with mild detergents and let them air dry completely. If you’re hardcore about logging your miles, this cleaning should happen routinely, but at a minimum we recommend at least once a year.

Latex Rubber Gloves are Finger Savers

Have you ever ridden in such cold weather that you completely lose the feel in your fingers, and the only way to warm them up is resting them against the exhaust pipe? It’s downright miserable.

Here’s an easy trick to help save your fingers the ache in extremely cold riding situations. Before putting on your gloves for a cold weather ride, throw on a set of latex rubber gloves. These will help protect your fingers against the wind chill and add insulation within your glove to add warmth. If your hands start sweating, pull over and take them off at the next fuel stop – just make sure to dry your hands if sweating. Again, this is a cheap trick for the extreme cold.
