The second half of the 2022 Touratech Rally was somehow even more awesome than the first two days. We got up first thing in the morning and headed out, me on my Yamaha Tenere 700 and Travis on his Honda Africa Twin. Our first stop was the Tyee Mountain Lookout, which is not easy to get to. The rocky, steep, and technical road to the top was the most difficult thing I’ve ever ridden on an adventure motorcycle and not surprisingly, my Tenere 700 handled it magnificently.

Once we reached the top, we were rewarded with one of the most breathtaking views I’ve ever seen. Tyee Mountain Lookout is one of my favorite places on the planet. Afterward, we did a bit more Honda Africa Twin and Yamaha Tenere 700 off road riding to get down the mountain before heading out to check out the Sugarloaf Lookout. Sugarloaf was amazing, as well.

Afterward, the Tenere 700 and Africa Twin carried us down the mountain and back to camp, where we checked out the Touratech Rally slow race and Touratech Rally raffle drawings before retiring to our campsite for some cigars, beverages, and lightsabers? Let’s just say Dork in the Road camping is never boring…

This year’s 2022 Touratech Rally West was an amazing event filled with motorcycle demo rides, awesome new bikes like the Ducati Desert X, amazing presentations, a thrilling motorcycle challenge course, and of course four days of camping and hanging out with amazing people and riding in the beautiful mountainous surroundings of Plain, Washington. In part one of my 2022 Touratech Rally West series, we check out the vendors on vendor row, test ride the Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Pro, the Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled, Ducati Multistrada V4, and the KTM 500 EXC-F before checking out the world famous Touratech Rally challenge course hosted by the diabolical Jimmy Lewis.

Afterward, we retreat to the camping area for some beverages and campfire conversation before heading to bed early to get up and do some amazing riding on my Yamaha Tenere 700 the following day.

The fourth and final day of the 2021 Touratech Rally in Plain, Washington was the most important for me because it was the day I was scheduled to give my presentation. But first, we headed over to the Triumph of America tent to take the 2022 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro for a test ride. We had an amazing time putting the Tiger 900 Rally Pro through its paces on an awesome offroad track through the wilderness near Plain, WA. Afterward, I ran through my presentation a few times and then headed over to the video tent to give my Touratech Rally 2021 presentation entitled: Adventure is For Everyone.

Thank you so much to the crowd that came out to watch me give my presentation. Afterward, I was able to give out some awesome gear from Giant Loop to those who came to watch! Following my presentation, we headed back to the video tent to watch the Backcountry Discovery Route presentation covering all 11 awesome Backcountry Discovery Routes. Probably the most common question they get is “When is the Oregon BDR coming?” and our pal Nathan did a great job answering the Oregon BDR question diplomatically and without giving away too much information, but he did say enough to make us hopeful that we might see an official Oregon Backcountry Discovery Route very, very soon…

Following the presentations, we checked out the Touratech Rally slow race and raffle drawings, before heading back to our sleeping bags for the night. The following day, there was nothing left to do but say goodbye to the 2021 Touratech Rally west, pack up, and drive home! Day three of the 2021 Touratech Rally West was probably the most eventful and packed full of the entire event for me. After enjoying the first two days of the 2021 Touratech Rally, I decided it was high time I wandered over and checked out vendor row. I was able to meet with and learn all about great products from amazing vendors like Hippo Hands, Heidenau tires, Law Tigers, Atlas Throttle Lock, TrailTech, Triumph Motorcycles, Harley Davidson, and more. I also had a chance to take a very close look at the 2021 Touratech Rally Black Forest Funduro course.

After checking out Vendor Row, I had the opportunity to do a short Yamaha TW200 Test Ride (thanks to BrYan from Hippo Hands letting me take his for a spin) before we suited up and headed out to ride an amazing route that took us to the top of Chumstick Mountain with some amazing views and great riding on the Suzuki DRZ400 and Honda Africa Twin. The fun didn’t stop there, though.

Once we got back to camp we were treated to whiskey and bacon courtesy of Atlas Throttle Lock. Later that evening, we checked in with Nathan and Kris from For the Love of Knobs before heading over to check out the bonfire and enjoy a pleasant evening with all the other great participants at the Touratech Rally 2021!

Day 2 of the 2021 Touratech Rally West was another awesome time. We awoke to frost-covered motorcycles, tents, and trailers, but when the sun peeked up over the horizon, the temperature rose quickly. Before we could go riding, our friend Travis was forced to change out the rear tube on his Honda Africa Twin. After we got all that sorted, we decided to ride up to the Tyee Mountain Lookout. After taking on some amazing forest roads (paved, gravel, and dirt), and tackling the rocky, loose road section that led to the top of Tyee Mountain, we were rewarded with one of the most amazing 360 degree panorama views I’ve ever seen. You could see for miles in every direction and the scenery was breathaking. Afterward, we headed back down the mountain to the Touratech Rally 2021 grounds for an evening of cooking, drinking, campfires, and new friends. It was an amazing time at this year’s Touratech Rally, and I’m so looking forward to coming back for next year’s version in Plan, Washington.

Day 1 of my Touratech Rally West 2021 adventure began with a six hour road trip up Interstate 5, through the Columbia Gorge, across the river into Washington state, and through the farmland and forests to Plain, Washington. I was so excited to have been invited to be a presenter at the 2021 Touratech Rally, so I decided to make the trip up to Washington a day early. Once I arrived, I set up my enclosed trailer toy hauler camper conversion for the five days I’d spend there, met up with Beards, Bikes, and Camping to hear all about his road trip ordeal (TWO tire changes on his Honda Africa Twin), enjoyed a delicious burger for dinner, had a few beers, met my neighbors, and enjoyed a Mr. Puff Puff before heading off to sleep in my enclosed trailer camper.
