Adventure motorcycling is all about freedom—the freedom to explore far-off trails, tackle rugged terrain, and ride for days without limits. But there’s one component of your bike that can make or break that freedom: your suspension. While your motorcycle’s stock suspension may be fine for casual riding, it often falls short when faced with the demands of real-world adventure riding. Upgrading your suspension isn’t just a luxury—it’s a game-changer for performance, safety, and comfort.

Here are the top ten reasons you should consider making the investment.

Better Control on Rough Terrain

Adventure riding often means dealing with rocky trails, ruts, washboard roads, and unexpected obstacles. Upgraded suspension systems offer improved damping and rebound control, keeping your tires planted and your handling predictable. The difference is especially noticeable in technical terrain where stock suspension may “pack up” or lose composure. Poorly performing suspension can be dangerous especially in off-the-pavement conditions!

Increased Comfort for Long Rides

The limitations of stock suspension make you work harder than you should to control the bike. This can lead to muscle strain and fatigue while riding. Premium suspension components soak up bumps more effectively, smoothing out the ride and reduces the physical effort needed to control the bike. The result? You’ll feel more comfortable, have more energy, and feel fresher, helping you enjoy the ride without fading near the end of the day. You might actually start playing with the terrain features instead of avoiding them!

Adventure riders often load their bikes with panniers, tools, camping gear, and sometimes a passenger. Stock suspension is set for an average rider weight of 170-180 lbs and can quickly become overwhelmed with heavier loads. Upgraded systems allow you to adjust preload, compression, and rebound for your exact loadout, ensuring optimal performance whether you’re running light or fully packed.

A tired or undersprung suspension can cause excessive front-end dive during braking, reducing control and increasing stopping distances. With upgraded springs and damping, your bike stays more level, helping your tires maintain grip and stability under hard braking—critical when you have to stop quickly and safely on gravel, sand, or pavement.

Better suspension doesn’t just improve off-road performance—it transforms your on-road handling too. Stiffer springs and improved damping help keep your bike planted in corners, reduce wallowing, and deliver more precise steering feedback. You’ll feel more confident carving through twisty backroads or navigating tight mountain passes. Your ride will simply be more FUN!

Greater Durability, Reliability and Serviceable

Stock suspension components can fail under sustained hard use, especially when carrying heavy loads over challenging terrain. They also begin to degrade around 15,000 miles and need to be replaced at 20,000 miles. Upgraded systems are built with higher-quality materials, better seals, and superior heat dissipation, making them more resistant to wear and less prone to failure in the middle of nowhere.

When it’s time to service your Touratech Shocks we simply replace the oil and any wear items and you continue to enjoy the same shock.

Adjustability for Changing Conditions

An adventure can throw every kind of surface at you in one day: smooth pavement, rough gravel, deep sand, and rocky climbs. High-quality suspension gives you the ability to fine-tune settings for each scenario—whether you’re dialing in more plushness for sand or firming things up for high-speed road sections.

Reduced Bottoming Out

Fully loaded ADV bikes hitting a deep pothole or drop-off can easily blow through their travel, leading to a harsh bottom-out that’s bad for your bike and your body. Upgraded suspension with proper spring rates and progressive damping dramatically reduces this problem, protecting both your components and your spine. Touratech sets the rear shock and/or fork cartridge spring rate according to your individual riding style & weight!

Boosted Rider Confidence

When your suspension is dialed in, your bike feels more predictable and capable. That confidence translates into smoother lines, better throttle control, and the willingness to tackle more challenging routes. Upgrading suspension doesn’t just change your bike—it changes the way you ride.

Increased Resale Value

A well-maintained bike with premium suspension is a strong selling point. Prospective buyers know the value of a quality suspension upgrade, and it can help your bike stand out in a crowded used market. In many cases, a top-tier suspension system retains significant value if you ever decide to sell it separately.

Final Thoughts

Upgrading your adventure motorcycle’s suspension isn’t just about comfort or performance—it’s about unlocking the full potential performance and fun of your bike. Whether you’re tackling the Backcountry Discovery Routes, riding two-up across continents, or just chasing weekend dirt, premium suspension gives you the control, safety, and endurance to go further with confidence.

Your motorcycle can only perform as well as the components that connect it to the ground. Make sure those components are ready for wherever your next adventure takes you.

Touratech Suspension is simply the best suspension made for Adventure Motorcycles. Touratech Suspension is designed, manufactured and tested specifically for ADV riding. It’s serviceable for years of use and the ultimate upgrade to your riding experience.

STRONG START

Just a few minutes’ drive outside of Mammoth, we already have flowing trails under our lugs on our way into the Inyo National Forest. Given the mountainous terrain, the trails are surprisingly sandy, taking some of us aback at first. The winding routes through sparse pine forests put a smile on our faces – while the occasional challenges significantly raise our adrenaline levels. Some sections have long hairpin bends that we would have expected to find on a motocross track rather than a forest road. Part of our group is Richie Few, an instructor from the BMW Performance Centre. I try to follow in his footsteps and use my helmet camera to capture the light-footed way he sweeps over the trails. Richie is a magician on his BMW R 1250 GS, and it looks so playful how he moves his 300-kilo load over the challenging terrain.

THE CONQUEST OF MT. PATTERSON

Adventure riders looking for riding challenges will get their money’s worth on the Northern California BDR. One particularly exciting section is the ride up Mt Patterson. Rugged would be an understatement for this section. The track is interspersed with rocks and deeply rutted by erosion gullies. There are also tight hairpin bends, enormous gradients – and thin air. We have already reached our limits several times with the large motorbikes during our summit assault when we finally pass the tree line. One last steep climb lies between us and the 3,558 metre summit, the highest point in the Sweetwater Mountains. We tackle the ascent individually and are finally able to park our bikes on the summit plateau. We enjoy the view in all directions and are a little amazed that we have conquered this summit on our adventure bikes. Not without envy, Ritchie says: “That’s not possible in South Carolina”.

“I’M GLAD IT WASN’T EVEN HARDER.”

The timely localisation of a forest fire has always been a crucial step in firefighting. Before the advent of satellite imagery and other technologies, this was done by placing a person in a small hut on a mountain who could determine the location of the fire based on a map and estimated distance. Some of these outposts are still manned in the summer months, but most are not. Nevertheless, many fire towers are well preserved and provide a great opportunity to survey the surrounding area in all directions. We visited most of the nearly a dozen towers along the route – and some of them offer the most difficult climbs I’ve ever tackled. When I get to the top of the Sierra Buttes, completely out of breath and surprised that I made it, I look at Ritchie and say, “Man, that was tough”. He grins and says, “I’m glad it wasn’t any harder.” I take this as a small token of appreciation for our driving performance.

The weather changes and we find ourselves in cold rain and thick snow flurries north of Bear Valley. It’s a long, gruelling day and I’m grateful to have heated grips on my GS. Fortunately, this miserable day has a warm surprise in store. A nondescript, muddy road takes us a short distance off the main track before we set our sights on an ageing rural homestead with a few dilapidated outbuildings on a grassy wilderness. After parking the bikes, we find a place to sleep in the primitive wooden huts. Ritchie points to one of the buildings and says, “Look at that”. I seem to look confused, so he adds: “There’s a bar in there.” I say, “Yeah, right,” my voice dripping with sarcasm. Richie insists I come with him. When I open the door, I can’t believe my eyes. It’s a tiny saloon, heated by a wood-burning stove, with a ceiling littered with dollar notes that leave not a square inch uncovered.

Many know Owen from his work at Long Beach BMW Motorcycles and Rawhyde Adventures, or from having serenaded many motorbike events with his electric violin. Chris is an accomplished musician and composer known for scoring Hollywood films such as Clueless and My Big Fat Greek Wedding. He has also written the soundtrack to recent BDR documentaries. Both have strapped their musical instruments to their adventure bikes and travelled here to surprise us. We hug and drink and dance as we enjoy this get-together.

The bartenders work on a voluntary basis to maintain the tradition of this special place. They tell us about the history and we learn that the name has nothing to do with the anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
JOURNEY INTO THE PAST

Backcountry Discovery Routes provide deep insights into the state you are travelling through, and the Northern California BDR is no exception. This route is characterised by California’s mining history, which we experience impressively during our visit to the gold mining town of Bodie. Nestled between rolling hills of yellow grass lies a ghost town with 200 buildings left to decay. In the brief period from 1877 to 1882, Bodie was a bustling town with a population of almost 8,000. A local historian guides us through the site and tells us stories about life in this town. The walk through the remains of the Standard Gold Mill is particularly sobering and shows us the miserable conditions under which people here chased the dream of wealth.

ABOUT NORTHERN CALIFORNIA BDR

The Northern California BDR leads from Mammoth Lakes, CA to the Oregon border. It is divided into nine stages, is around 1,500 kilometres long and can be completed in six to ten days. The longest distance without refuelling is around 200 kilometres. There are motels and hotels in the towns along the route, some of which have a long and exciting history. Designated public campgrounds are located in the national forests and other towns along the route. In terms of riding, the Northern California BDR is in the mid-range of BDRs, but offers some ‘ALT Harder’ and three optional ‘ALT Expert’ sections, providing alternative routes for particularly experienced riders.

The Dalton Highway is one of the most remote and exhilarating roads in North America. Originally built to support the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, it stretches from Fairbanks to Deadhorse on the edge of the Arctic Ocean. Gravel dominates the route, which winds through vast forests, tundra, and arctic plains. It’s notorious for its isolation, unpredictable weather, and slippery surfaces. Reaching Prudhoe Bay feels like conquering the end of the Earth—an adventure motorcyclist’s rite of passage.

Did you know that more motorcycles tip over while parked than while being ridden? It’s true! And the sneaky culprit is often your side stand foot. That small but mighty part is the only thing keeping your bike upright when you’re off it.

Here’s the catch: many stock side stands are little more than skinny steel spikes sticking out from your frame. Sure, they might work fine on solid, flat ground—but in real-world conditions like dirt, mud, sand, or hot asphalt, they can sink or slip, leaving your bike on its side. The result? Scratched components, costly repairs, and sometimes damage to whatever your bike lands on.

The good news? You can easily boost your bike’s stability with a Large Sidestand Foot from Touratech. It increases the surface area of your side stand, giving your adventure motorcycle a solid footing on all kinds of terrain. Don’t let a little thing bring your big ride down—check out our selection today!

As much as we’d like to explore everything the Backcountry Discovery Routes offer, the reality is that most of us don’t have the time to pound out the miles of a typical BDR. So, seeing a need for something more manageable, BDR has another idea: BDR-X.

This new concept introduces all the fun and challenges of a BDR, but in a loop format that can take anywhere from 2-4 days. This way, you can come on or come off the route anywhere you please, and potentially do the whole thing in a weekend.

The latest BDR-X is the PA Wilds loop, totaling just over 500 miles of exploring the lush landscape Pennsylvania has to offer. To quote the BDR:

The PA Wilds BDR-X is a spur off the Mid Atlantic BDR in Pennsylvania designed by one of the original architects of the MABDR. The east side of this loop includes parts of section 8 and 9 of the MABDR but then turns west into the PA Wilds before looping back to the start in New Columbia, PA some 500-plus miles later.

Similar to the MABDR, the route runs mostly on dirt and gravel roads through Pennsylvania State Forests with short stretches of pavement at the start, in between the forests, and at the end of each section. The route is designed in 4 sections with convenient places to eat, camp or lodge overnight at the end of each section. The beauty of being a loop route is that riders can start and finish from any point along the route.

The PA Wilds BDR-X has a familiar feel to that of the beloved MABDR with a few more optional advanced sections for those looking for a bit of a challenge. Ride it in conjunction with the MABDR and extend your adventure or ride the “X” alone and get your BDR fix over a long weekend.

The four sections create a loop around Interstate 80 or Route 6, allowing quick access to either one of the loops, regardless of whether you’re running them backward or forward. I’ve ridden many of these trails in the past but never looped them all together. I’m planning to ride the PA Wilds when peak leave-changing season occurs here in Pennsylvania; stay clicked to this blog for a review!

Following is a breakdown of each section. Each can be completed with any sized adventure motorcycle with at least 80/20 tires if it’s dry, though 50/50s are preferred, especially if it’s wet!

Section 1: New Columbia to Wellsboro

You start the PA Wilds loop in New Columbia en route to Wellsboro, a town located near the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. Again, looking at the BDR map, if it seems like you’re copying section 8 of the MABDR—that’s because you are.

Still, the riding here is excellent, with relatively easy gravel roads serving as a warm-up for what’s to come. If you’re looking for more of a challenge right off the bat, the BDR maps are top-notch in that optional, harder deviations are built right in for more experienced riders.

The longest of the four sections, you start in Wellsboro for section 2 and immediately head southeast towards Reynolds Spring before heading north after Hyner Run State Park. The Hammersley Wild Area and Sizerville State Park await you as you continue east before ultimately hitting your stop for the day at St. Marys.

There are many twists and turns throughout the entire run, and the scenery makes you want to slow down and enjoy the view. Apart from the shorter paved section in the middle, you’re primarily on dirt the entire way through.

Stage 3 of the PA Wilds loop has you largely headed south, starting at St. Marys before your terminus at State College.

We’re really getting into the PA Wilds now, as you’ll be riding amongst the elks at the Elk State Forest, itself a fascinating location with a rich mining history worth stopping and learning more about. Again, the map includes a few aggressive routes if you’re up to the challenge.

You’ll find drivable trails along the beginning of the route, leading to twisty stuff towards the end. If you really want a challenge, try Sharpback Hollow.

It’s an optional swampy section filled with mud and ruts that’ll be sure to test your skill—and is guaranteed to get you and your bike properly dirty. What a perfect way to end the PA Wilds loop.

Taking advantage of the awesome adventure riding Pennsylvania has to offer is a brilliant move by the BDR team. Individually, these routes don’t make it into the main MADR, which is a shame.

There are several examples of smaller routes like these throughout the country that don’t necessarily fit the bill of being included in the main Discovery Route but deserve some kind of recognition.

Thankfully, this wasn’t lost on the BDR team. The PA Wilds BDR-X is just the latest example of a series of BDR-X routes to be introduced in due time. As always, the BDR website has all the information you need to plan your trip, including interactive maps, GPS coordinates, free GPS tracks download, lodging recommendations, and much more. Expect more of these for other states in the future.
